Introduction |
It's a rarely publicised fact but Thailand is home to what are probably the world's 4 largest freshwater fish species. Consequently a fishing holiday to Thailand is the only way any angler stands a chance of targeting all 4 of the world's largest freshwater fish in one trip.
The Giant Mekong Catfish, the Arapaima, the Giant Siamese Carp and the Giant Freshwater Stingray have all been reported in one form or another to attain weights in excess of 300kg or 660LB. In the case of the Giant Mekong Catfish, Giant Freshwater Stingray, there is no question in our mind that these weights have been attained by these species in the wild. In fact in the case of the Stingray maybe 500kg is even possible in the wild. In the case of the Giant Siamese Carp and Arapaima our feeling is that perhaps 230kg is the ceiling, although we are sure others would disagree.
There is some debate, which of these species grows the largest, but whatever an anglers personal opinion is about how large these fish grow, Thailand is still the only place where all 4 can be targeted by the angler during one trip, and it's not unreasonable to expect to catch all 4 of them in a single trip to! From our angling experience, we believe we know which fish holds the crown for the worlds largest freshwater fish, why not come and find out for yourself!
Please note the objective of the one and two week specimen hunter trips is to provide the specimen hunter with the best possible opportunity to catch all 4 of our target species, therefore the itinerary for the 2nd week will be largely determined by the results of the first week.

* The Freshwater Stingray is an estuary species that is still currently understudied, it's a matter of some debate whether this species will ultimately be proven to be predominantly a freshwater or brackish water species.
